We had about 370 visitors to our website last month. Actually, we had 370 visits, not really 370 visitors. I’m assuming some people have visited many times, and others only once.

Thanks to Stephanie and Wes, our website is an amazing tool for reaching people around the world. That’s 370 visits, not including those of us who post on the website!  (The website ignores us when it recognizes our computers.)  We posted a story about a visitor who told us about the inspiration he felt from his sergeant in Somalia.  I wrote about his description of the sergeant, I heard from a sergeant in Kabul, Afghanistan.  I’m not sure how he found our website, but he said his wanted to be that kind of sergeant. In the past year, we have also heard from an author we mentioned.

So google us!  Go to google, and type in hickory bend umc.  You’ll find a world of information and inspiration.  If you want to post articles, it’s very easy.  See Stephanie, Wes, or one of the Youth.  You can click on years of the newsletters, listen to a sermon you missed or one you want to review. You can click on the calendar and see pictures of events at the church.  You are probably mentioned or pictured on the website, so check yourself out!

This Christmas Eve, Summit Hospital will be almost empty.  The only people there will be patients in ICU, their families, a few families in maternity, and the faithful staff who work so hard to make sure they are given care. For several years, Hickory Bend has taken a holiday meal to Summit Hospital ICU on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Easter.  If you would like to be part of this ministry, speak to Jeannie, Gabby, or any of the Youth.  For more information, call 615-403-8455.

]]> http://www.hickorybendumc.com/main/2011/11/christmas-story-in-scripture-carols-and-drama/feed/ 1 Making Room In The Inn http://www.hickorybendumc.com/main/2009/12/making-room-in-the-inn/ http://www.hickorybendumc.com/main/2009/12/making-room-in-the-inn/#comments Mon, 21 Dec 2009 14:36:51 +0000 Emalie http://www.hickorybendumc.com/main/?p=493 Perfect timing!  This year, Hickory Bend is making Room In The Inn on Christmas Day!  How exciting that we can actually be with our guests on the night we celebrate the birth of our Lord!  Jesus was born in a stable because there was no room in the inn.  On Christmas night, we will welcome our guests with food, clean linens, and a safe place to spend the night.  We will also be able to take the love and care of Hickory Bend to our homeless guests.  We are so pleased to be a part of this wonderful ministry with Andrew Price Memorial UMC and approximately 150 other churches in the Nashville area.

A few years ago, on Christmas Eve, we were preparing for Room In The Inn, and Victoria asked me if they should make all the beds. I said that I thought they should.  Elizabeth said, “Well, we thought we probably wouldn’t have any guests tonight.”

“Really, I’m sure we will have guests tonight.” The girls replied that they would be surprised if we had any guests on Christmas Eve.

“It seems like your family would want you to come home for Christmas!  They would come and find you for Christmas, wouldn’t they?”  I love it that they believed that to be true, but we were full on Christmas Eve, and I’m sure we will be full for Christmas Day, too.  Our guests are often trapped in difficult situations with complicated family dynamics and terrible spiritual anguish. We are often able to remind them that we all serve a great God who loves us and who is able to make wonderful changes in our lives.

We always need innkeepers, servers, bed makers, breakfast cooks, van riders, launderers, and hosts.  If you cannot come that night, you might want to send socks, undies, food, or lunches.  If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please call Judy at 754-4482, or Emalie at 403-8455.

Over the years, it has been clear that the residents who are the last to live at Cloverbottom are increasingly fragile and vulnerable. It is a joy to be a small part of their lives, inviting our friends to Vacation Bible School or visiting at Christmas.  We will miss the friendships our children have developed with Cloverbottom residents, and the inspiration of observing their caretakers at work.
We certainly pray for the residents during this difficult transition.  We also pray for those who are losing their jobs during this move.  Most of all, we pray for better care for those who live so near to us, and whom our Lord called, “the least of these”, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Come join us for a Children’s Christmas Program beginning at 5 p.m. in the fellowship hall followed by our “Lighting the Word for the World” program out under the shelter. After we ‘turn on the lights’, we’ll return to the fellowship hall for cookies, hot chocolate, coffee and hot cider. All we need now are some cookies and YOU!

We are asking for undecorated cookies for the children to decorate. So bring your cookies, kids, mittens, coats, and hats and join us at 5:00 pm Sunday, December 7th to help kick the Christmas season off as we remember the “Reason for the Season.”
