What follows is a list of all the activities that we’re involved in as a church. This list (in part) was presented at our Annual Charge Conference that was held on October 15, 2008.

OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY

  • Meals for Summit Hospital ICU Waiting Room - Church members prepare and deliver home-cooked meals to the Summit Hospital ICU waiting rooms (for those families of ICU patients) on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We’re sure to always include the ICU nurses and doctors. We’ve been taking food to the Intensive Care waiting room and nurses’ stations for several years now. There are always many ‘thank yous’, hugs and even tears. Those of us who deliver and ‘set up’ the meals always receive such a tremendous blessing. We are so grateful that we can provide a little bit of ‘comfort’ at a time that is so stressful for these folks.
  • Blanket Brigade - A group of ladies are working on hand-made lap blankets and neck pillows for individuals in need. In early June we delivered twenty-six crocheted and fleece blankets to the Skyline branch of Alive Hospice. They recently have asked for neck pillows. Seven have already been made. Our next delivery is tentatively scheduled for early December.
  • Room in the Inn – One Friday night a month from November through March, HBUMC provides homecooked dinners and packed lunches to homeless women . We also provide them with new, warm socks and undergarments, entertainment and fellowship during the evening meal, and protection throughout the night. Hickory Bend UMC is able to participate in the Room in the Inn Program by working in conjunction with Andrew Price United Methodist Church.
  • UNDIE Sunday is a clothing drive for undergarments, which are made available to the ladies who are visitors to the Room in the Inn program. Each year, HBUMC members generously donate new and/or gently used undergarments for this program.
  • Clover Bottom Angel / Mitten Tree - Last December, HBUMC once again participated in the Angel / Mitten Tree program for Clover Bottom Developmental Center. We provided and delivered gifts, food, and entertainment for one unit at this facility during the Christmas season.
  • Bethlehem Center – We gathered school supplies in September and toys at Christmas that were delivered to this ministry.
  • UMYF Mission Trip - For the past two years, our youth group has been involved in mission trips to other communities. Our youth have been to Mountain TOP and a camp for the deaf near Chattanooga, Tennessee. The trips were paid for from fund raising drives and contributions from our congregation. We were able to provide financial assistance to Andrew Price UMC UMYF that allowed their entire youth group to participate in the mission trip.
  • Lighting the WORD for the World – Church members have constructed and painted a lighted Christmas display of the nativity, which includes animals and angels, as well as the ‘walls’ of Bethlehem city. Each year this display is assembled in an area that’s most visible to the community and passing traffic. Usually on the first Sunday in Advent we come together as a congregation to “turn on the lights” of the display, sing carols and worship. The scene remains lighted every evening during the Advent season. The response from the surrounding community has been very positive and overwhelming.
  • East Nashville Cooperative Ministries—We gathered canned goods at Thanksgiving and warm coats last winter that were delivered to this ministry.
  • Studio One at Clover Bottom—Members donated money to buy felt for craft classes for Clover Bottom residents.
  • Red Bird Mission School—The youth are sponsoring a drive to collect coupons for education to help this school get supplies and equipment.
  • Tornado Cleanup-—At least three members donated physical labor to help tornado victims. Community Care Fellowship—One family provides monthly support for this ministry to the homeless.
  • Adopt-A-Soldier—Seventeen families have adopted the soldiers in one unit in Iraq to send letters and care packages to through December.
  • Orphan Sponsorship—The Seekers Sunday school class sends support to Delvi Ann, a young woman in an orphanage in Indonesia.
  • Domestic Violence Shelter—One family supports this ministry regularly.
  • Children in Iraq—We sent school supplies for distribution in this war-torn country.
  • Eyeglasses for the Poor—We contribute eyeglasses to the Lions Club for distribution in third world countries.
  • Birthday Giving, Hardship Fund—Money we give to the birthday pig and money that we leave at the altar on Communion Sundays go into our hardship fund for distribution to those in need.
  • Metro Schools—Several members responded to a request from Emalie to help monitor T-Cap testing.
HOUSE ACTIVITIES
  • Expansion of the Music Program - With the hiring of the current music director, the music program has increased from one choir to three! In addition to the adult choir, we now have the ‘Joyful Noise’ choir for ages 3 –12 and the “Not So Joyful Noise” choir for ages 13 – 18. A bell choir has been added with members ages 14 – 70. An orchestra is being developed. We have a ladies quartet and a newly formed men’s quartet.
  • Silent Auction – We had our first annual Silent Auction last year and raised enough money to purchase a much needed industrial size refrigerator and had money left to be applied to the purchase of an ice machine for the church kitchen. This year’s proceeds will be used for “Lighting the Word” display, parade float and church building projects.
  • Valentine’s Day Dinner – This long standing event is sponsored by the Adult Choir. Each year a theme or place is chosen and decorations and food is prepared that goes with the theme. To date, our ‘patrons’ have been to Italy, the Islands, Australia, the “Nifty Fifties’ Café, and Mardi Gras. The food is quite tasty and the entertainment is always a surprise. Proceeds go to the music program.
  • Easter Breakfast / Egg Hunt - For the last several years, the Easter Breakfast has been sponsored by the UMYF as a fund-raiser for their mission trips. It’s held each year immediately following the Sunrise Service. The Egg Hunt is sponsored by the Education Committee and is a big hit with the elementary school age children. It’s held right after the breakfast and prior to the start of Sunday School.
  • Good Grub Cafe- Each Wednesday evening a home cooked meal is prepared and available to anyone who wants to have dinner at the Good Grub Café. A retired couple of our congregation donate their time each week to prepare and set up the meal. There’s a charge for the meal and all proceeds above the cost of food go to the new church entrance fund.
  • Sunday School / Bible Study - Our Sunday School program is currently offering four classes for nursery through high school age children and two adult classes. There are two Bible Study classes – one on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. and one on Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
PROJECTS/FINANCES
  • New Roof Project - We are currently finishing the biggest building project in HBUMC history since the addition of the fellowship hall in 1975. It was necessary to completely re-roof the whole building. This project has been underway since the first of July. There were unforeseen structural problems that had to be corrected and flooding during a rainstorm that delayed and increased the cost of the project. We are in the final stages of completing the project. This will be celebrated on November 16, 2008. This day will be the celebration Sunday for the church’s anniversary. There will also be a special rededication service and luncheon planned for that day. The most exciting aspect of this project is that with all the additional work and expenses, the project came in just over $130,000 with zero debt.
  • Apportionments – HBUMC made a commitment at the beginning of this year to pay $1,200 monthly toward
  • apportionments. We have been able to meet our commitment so far this year.
JUST FOR FUN
  • HBUMC Christmas Parade Float – In December 2007, HBUMC had it’s first float entry in the Donelson / Hermitage Christmas Parade. We had several members of our congregation who walked the parade route handing out cards (over 700) with information about our church. The theme of the float included the message of the nativity and live music proclaiming the birth of our Savoir. The float won first place for “Non-commercial entry.
  • Not So Talented Talent Show – Last year was the first year for this event. There were 20+ acts, three judges, aband and emcee. It was an evening of great fun for everyone.
We can all be proud of the work that God has enabled us to do . With Him all things are possible!

Work on our church building has now progressed to the point of installing the vinyl siding and soffit around the eaves and on the ends of the new roof. The front of the building is ready for siding to be installed on the walls around the cross and around the Fellowship Hall door. Work is progressing on the overhang at the Office door and soon will be covered by vinyl material. more…

I’ve been promising this for several months and the time is here. The next 8-10 weeks are going to be a whirlwind of activity so we suggest you take a seat and hang on tight. It’s going to be a wild ride but one I’m sure you will enjoy. When we emerge on the other side in 2009 we’ll be that much richer for having been here. Usually I try to highlight the Sundays of special interest for the month, however, there is a special service planned for every Sunday this month! December is looking about the same! more…

Reminder to council members . . there will be a council meeting after worship on Sunday, November 9th. Please mark your calendars to be there. This should be the final meeting of the 2008 council.

Please have your committee reports prepared so we can accomplish as much as possible in the least amount of time. I know many of you have lots of activities going on. Let me know if you have any questions.

As you prepare your Thanksgiving meal for your family, why not add one more dish for our Summit ministry? We’ve been taking food to the Intensive Care waiting room and nurses’ stations for several years now, and we’ve been truly blessed. This ministry means so much to those who receive a Thanksgiving meal during very stressful times in the waiting room. We hope to have a menu posted on the back bulletin board around the first of November.

We’d like to have two dishes of each–one for the waiting room and one for the nurses. If you’d like to help us, please contact Joan Williams, Debbie Keith or Jeannie Gleaves.
